Lastly, the tests on Linux were done starting with Mesa 21.3.2 up to the latest 22.1.0 devel with the same results. Toggling the same video settings, as done in the Linux test, reduces the artifacting but only slightly.
An obvious issue, as seen in the video, is that SSAO causes the entire screen to go black when toggled on.įor the sake of experimenting, I also tested the same engine build on Windows 11 running the Adrenalin 22.3.2 driver and while it's closer to looking how it's supposed to, clearly the OpenGL driver and game renderer are not getting along. Attached is a video that will help showcase the issue (as well as highlighting the difference with the video settings toggled on and off). There are a series of video effects options which when toggled off helps somewhat but it still has a fundamental issue. I don't know how to describe the issue exactly but it's substantially dark while having a high contrast on whatever color and details are rendered. The game runs but the graphics are definitely not correct.
My preferred version is Quake 2 XP (q2xp v1.26.9 available at for the Windows executable and for instructions and source to compile the Linux version). After switching over full-time to Linux at end of last year, I was itching to install Quake 2.
